Hot August Days and Nights!

As we really get the summer cookin - August could just be our best month of the year down here at the beach. We just finished a great weekend in the Surf Festival and its numerous fun events all beach oriented. Congratulations to the Good Stuff Volleyball team for their very impressive finish in the grueling two day six man volleyball tournament in Manhattan. Now in their 25th year together (8 with Good Stuff) they hung tough in the heat and with some very talented AVP powered teams to finish 4th for the tournament. Any one familiar with this tournament knows what I’m talking about. Good Job Guys!
Next up starting this Thursday thru Sunday we have in its 43rd year the Wimbledon of Pro Volleyball, AVP Manhattan Beach Open. With the weather that we have been enjoying and the excitement of Pro Volleyball, this surely will be a great weekend in Manhattan Beach. Both the Women’s final on Saturday and the Men’s on Sunday will be broadcasted live on NBC. Also new this year is Sport’s Illustrated search for the new face that will be featured in next year’s swimsuit issue. Good Stuff will also be part of the action. We will again be down on the beach serving up fresh wrapps, salads, smoothies, cookies and strawberry lemonade to save you from having to walk up that hill to satisfy you appetite. All this and Good Stuff, looks like the making of a big weekend.

Our Local Lifeguards kick butt!
One of my favorite events of the entire year is the competition of the lifeguards under the lights at night during the International Surf Festival. This year was not a disappointment. Friday night the local lifeguards representing Manhattan returned to their winning ways by impressively sweeping all 4 events for the evening including the coveted Bud Stevenson trophy. This is a grueling relay of 4 swimmers, one surf-ski, 4 paddlers and 4 two-man teams in the dory. The surf was rough which made the race even more exciting. On Saturday night the team from Southern Section South Bay again put together a very impressive win to make its 8 in a row in the Taplin relay! This annual lifeguard event is the most prestigious lifeguard event in Southern California. The Taplin relay has been held every year since 1936 with the exception of 1942 thru 1945, when the event was suspended during World War II. This group of very talented athletes work together to make it look easy, which it is not. The winning team gets the honor of holding the perpetual trophy until the following years race. The individual names of all sixteen team members from the winning team are engraved on the perpetual trophy to mark their place in history. Good Stuff is proud to be to have its name associated with our local lifeguards and proud to have it’s dory and paddleboard involved on the winning teams both Saturday and Sunday!

11 years ago Athena’s dad came to me and asked if I would interview his 15-year-old daughter. I thought 15 was a bit young but since he worked for the city of Hermosa I better at least interview her. Well that was the start of a very special time in Good Stuff’s long span of business. I hired that girl and she has really been part of our success over the years.
Athena started as a hostess and by the time she was 16 she was a server "Making bank" in her words. She has been a very valued employee over the past 11 years After starting in Hermosa she helped in 94 when we opened Manhattan and again played a key role in opening up our Redondo store in 1999. She stayed on in Redondo and continues to be part of that successful store.
